How to unblock distracting apps with an NFC tag using Jomo?
How to unblock distracting apps with an NFC tag using Jomo?
Jomo lets you block distracting apps, then access them again by tapping an NFC tag on your iPhone.
The main advantage is that you can leave the “key” that re-enables distractions behind, turning your phone into a distraction-free device until you return.
What is an NFC tag?
An NFC (Near Field Communication) tag is a small electronic device that stores data readable by NFC-enabled devices, such as smartphones, when nearby.
These tags are inexpensive and come in all forms and shapes: stickers, key fobs, cards, etc.
Where to find NFC tags that are compatible with Jomo?
You probably already have NFC tags at home that can be used with Jomo. For example:
Your work badge
Your subway/bus card
Your credit card
An Apple AirTag
If you don’t have one or they can’t be scanned, you can easily buy NFC tags on popular platforms like Amazon or Alibaba.
Here are some of our recommendations:
NFC stickers
NFC cards
NFC key fobs
You can get 10 of these for less than $10, so you can easily share them with friends and family!
💡 To get NFC tags that can be scanned by iPhones, make sure to search for “NTAG215” NFC tags.
I’ve got an NFC tag! How do I use it as the key for distracting apps with Jomo?
There are two ways Jomo can be used with a physical key:
To use your NFC tag as a switch (scan to unblock apps, then tap to block everything again in Jomo), add a new action rule by going to Rules > + > Action > Scan First.
If you want to pause a rule for a few minutes by scanning your NFC tag, open your rule's detail screen in Jomo, then go to Breaks > Friction > NFC Tag.
If you want to learn more about Jomo screen time rules (including what action rules or breaks are), we invite you to read our dedicated guide here.
