How to block apps and keep notifications on iPhone with Jomo?

If an app is blocked, you won’t receive any notifications. Unfortunately, this behavior is enforced by Apple and can’t be changed. However, with this alternative blocking method, you can block your apps while still receiving notifications.

This method relies on the Shortcuts app (developed and distributed by Apple). If it’s not already installed on your iPhone, we recommend downloading it from the App Store.

How does this method work?

  1. Apps aren’t blocked by default.
  2. Every time you open one, it triggers a Session.
  3. The apps are then blocked.
  4. You’ll have to take a break.
  5. After a set amount of time (you decide how long), the apps will be unblocked.

How do you set it up?

  1. Open Jomo.
  2. Go to Rules.
  3. Tap +.
  4. Tap Recurring Session.
  5. In Block: choose what to block. In Active: select Always-On.
  6. In Block: turn on Breaks (More: set a reasonable duration, e.g., 15 min).
  7. Don’t schedule — tap Add to templates.

  1. Open the Shortcuts app.
  2. Tap New Automation.
  3. Choose App.
  4. Tap Choose and select the same apps as in your Jomo template.
  5. Tap Is Opened and enable Run Immediately.
  6. Tap Next.
  7. Tap Create New Shortcut (on iOS 17/18: New Blank Automation).
  8. In the search bar, type Jomo, then select Start Session.
  9. Tap the blue box, then choose the template you just created.
  10. Tap the blue chevron and set a duration that’s 5 minutes longer than your break time (e.g., 20 minutes for a 15-minute break).
  11. Turn off Show When Run.
  12. Tap Done.

To sum it up

In my example, Instagram won’t be blocked by default (so I’ll still get notifications). But when I open Instagram to use it, the app will immediately be blocked. I’ll need to take a short break (limited to 15 minutes). Once that break is over, the app will stay blocked for 5 more minutes. After the full 20 minutes have passed, the app will be unblocked and notifications will start coming through again.

😅 If that still sounds confusing — don’t worry, I made a video.
