Setup an automation to count app opens

In this article, you’ll find the complete tutorial for setting up an Open Limit (Legacy) in Jomo. We recommend taking your time and carefully following the instructions.
Please note that while this feature is still available in Advanced mode, it is no longer supported by Jomo. You use this feature at your own risk.

How Do I Know Whether to Use an Open Limit or a Lock?

Lock blocks your apps by default and then lets you use them X times per day for X minutes each time. An Open Limit, on the other hand, does not block by default and lets you use your apps X times per day, for as long as you want each time.

Locks only rely on Jomo. They’re easy to configure. Open Limits rely on both Jomo and the Shortcuts app. The setup is a bit more complex.

How to Set Up an Open Limit?

In Jomo:

  1. Go to Rules ▸ .
  2. Turn on Open Limits (Legacy).
  3. In Rules, tap Start Blocking.
  4. Choose Set an open limit.
  5. Configure it according to your preferences, especially the title and apps.
  6. In After, tap Automation set up?.
  7. Follow tutorial below.
  8. Confirm by tapping Schedule.

In Shortcuts:

  1. Open Shortcuts.
  2. Go to Automation, then New Automation.
  3. In the list, select App.
  4. Tap Choose, and select the apps you added in Jomo.
  5. Select Is Opened and Run Immediately.
  6. Tap Next.
  7. Tap Create New Shortcut. On iOS 17-18: New Blank Automation.
  8. In search, type and select Count App Open.
  9. In the blue section, type the exact name of your session.
  10. Confirm by tapping ✓ / Done.

Please note: the name of your rule in Shortcuts and in Jomo must be exactly the same, including spaces, capitalization, and punctuation. If it doesn’t match 100%, it won’t work.

What Should I Do If My Limit Doesn’t Work?

  1. Make sure the rule name is identical.
  2. Make sure the apps selected in Jomo are the same as the ones selected in Shortcuts.
  3. Make sure your rule in Jomo is fully completed and active.

Because this rule is no longer supported by Jomo, the team reserves the right not to investigate if it doesn’t work properly.
